Episode 1: The Anchor Institution with Prof. Ellen Hazelkorn
Our latest Epistemicast mini-series explores our universities’ integration with their local (non-academic) community and broader civic society – often termed “Third Mission”. Taking our lead from our sponsor’s annual PHAIDRAcon conference, we are looking at: Connecting Scholar and Citizen.
In this first of two episodes we dive straight into the real issues, discussing how educational elitism may be contributing toward current populist political backlashes against university funding and even academic expertise. We examine how the university’s civic mission can, not only, play an important part in reintegrating left-behind communities, but also in finding a necessary new “anchoring” role for many of our higher education institutions.
As we explore the university’s civic mission, we are lucky enough to be joined by Professor Ellen Hazelkorn, Professor Emeritus, Technological University of Dublin, joint editor of Policy Reviews in Higher Education and an internationally recognised authority on higher education and policy. The author/co-author of more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, policy briefs, books and book chapters, Ellen has also held senior advisory roles at the European Association of Institutions in Higher Education (EURASHE), the International Advisory Committee, Centre for International Higher Education, Boston College, USA, and the Leadership Forum, Centre for Global Higher Education (CGHE), Oxford University.
